History and Meaning
Historically known as Piazza Paniera del Sabato due to the historic market that used to take place there, it took on its current name following the plebiscite for annexation to the Kingdom of Italy. Today, it is the largest square in the ancient city of Barletta and preserves numerous historic buildings and the Church of San Gaetano. The square serves as a crossroads to reach the panoramic area of the walls, Via Cialdini, San Giacomo, and to exit the historic center heading towards the central station. At the center of the square, there is a natural oasis cared for by the Ambulatorio Popolare association, featuring a biological pond and an imposing column topped by a statue of the Madonna.
